DUNEDIN, Fla. Tim Thomas Jersey . -- Carlos Beltran homered for his first hit this spring, leading the New York Yankees past the Toronto Blue Jays 8-2 on Sunday. Jose Bautista hit his second homer in exhibition play for the Blue Jays. Beltrans solo home run came in the third off reliever Todd Redmond and landed far over the right-field fence. It capped a four-run inning that included a two-run homer by Eduardo Nunez. Beltran signed a three-year, $45 million contract with the Yankees in the off-season. He batted .296 with 24 homers and 84 RBIs with the St. Louis Cardinals last year. "You want to see guys swinging the bat well, obviously, but its really important at the end," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "It doesnt really matter sometimes. You can be swinging the bat horrible at the end of spring training and get off to a hot start and vice versa. But its always nice to see." Bautista connected off Vidal Nuno in the first. Nuno struck out three and gave up two hits in two innings. Toronto starter Esmil Rogers tossed two innings and allowed an earned run. The right-hander gave up three hits and struck out one. Jose Reyes, Edwin Encarnacion, Melky Cabrera and Adam Lind each doubled for the Blue Jays. Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter did not play. STARTING TIME Blue Jays: Rogers threw 36 pitches and worked almost-exclusively on his changeup, which he said is progressing well. "Thats what I was working for," Rogers said. "Down in the Dominican (Republic) during winter ball, I worked on my changeup and now I feel more comfortable. I got it before. The only reason is I didnt have too much confidence to throw that. Right now, I can throw anything I want." Rogers was 5-9 with a 4.77 ERA in 44 games with the Blue Jays last season. He is a candidate for the fifth spot in the rotation. Yankees: Nuno said he felt as if he "got a little happy with the fastball," which led to Bautistas home run. Nuno, who is a contender for the fifth spot in the rotation, appeared in five games with the Yankees last season and made three starts. He finished 1-2 with a 2.25 ERA. "Overall, Im just pleased a little bit with how the outcome came," he said. "It was just one pitch and Bautista just hit it out. Location was good and everything. (My fastball) just got overused a little bit and I wasnt using my secondary (pitches) like I was supposed to do." TRAINERS ROOM Blue Jays: Colby Rasmus was scratched from Sundays lineup because of a stiff neck. Rasmus was set to bat seventh, but opted to sit as a precaution. He does not expect it to be a long-term issue and hopes to return in a "couple days." "I feel all right, I just woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning," Rasmus said. Anthony Gose took Rasmus place in centre field and was 0 for 3 with a strikeout. Manager John Gibbons said closer Casey Janssen had an MRI on his sore right shoulder, but it did not show any damage. "Its just inflamed," Gibbons said. "Theres a lot of wear and tear on a guy over the years. Hes smart, backed off and well give him a little breather. Theres still a full month (of spring training) left. Hell be ready to go." Janssen, who saved 34 games for the Blue Jays last season, said he plans to rest and start throwing again in a few days. Yankees: Girardi said first baseman Mark Teixeira, limited to 15 games last season because of a right wrist injury, might play in his first spring training game on Thursday or Friday. Alfonso Soriano, recovering from flu-like symptoms, went through a workout Sunday morning that included batting practice and defensive drills. The outfielder/designated hitter could play in his first exhibition game in the next few days. FIRE DRILL The Yankees dealt with a minor scare before the game when a towel inside of a dryer caught fire in the grounds crew clubhouse located next door to the teams clubhouse. Girardi joked that "it got a little smoky" and said some players evacuated. There was no reported damage or injuries. PINEDA PITCHES Yankees fifth starter candidate Michael Pineda, who missed the past two seasons after right shoulder surgery, threw 21 of 35 pitches for strikes in a simulated game. He faced 10 batters, allowing two hits, striking out one and walking his final two hitters. Pineda and Hiroki Kuroda are scheduled to pitch in Fridays game against the Tigers in Tampa. Joe Pavelski Team USA Hockey Jersey . The Padres made the moves before Fridays game at Washington. They promoted infielder Jace Peterson from Double-A San Antonio and right-hander Kevin Quackenbush from Triple-A El Paso. Dustin Byfuglien Team USA Hockey Jersey . Paul, MN (SportsNetwork. http://www.hockeyauthenticusaonline.us/T...as-Jersey/ . Villar connected off Joe Saunders (11-14), sending a drive well over the left-field fence for his first career homer. The Astros scored six times in the first three innings to chase Saunders. NEW ORLEANS -- James Harden capped a 26-point performance with a tiebreaking jumper with 28 seconds left, and the Houston Rockets held on for their third straight victory, 103-100 over the reeling New Orleans Pelicans on Wednesday night. Eric Gordon scored a season-high 35 points, but the Pelicans lost their seventh straight. Terrence Jones scored 23 and Dwight Howard added 12 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks for the Rockets, who trailed by as many as 17 in the second quarter and by eight with about four minutes to go. Harden had a hand in 12 of Houstons final 17 points, scoring 10 and assisting on Howards alley-oop dunk. Anthony Davis added 24 points for New Orleans, his sixth straight game with 20 or more, but Darius Miller missed a potential tying 3 in the final seconds. Jason Smith and Brian Roberts each added 10 points for New Orleans, but Smith missed a potential tying jumper from the top of the key with 12 seconds left. Chandler Parsons who had 17 points, then made one of two free throws for the final margin. The Rockets made things difficult for themselves by missing 16 of 41 free throws, and won despite leading for only 1:14 the entire game. The Pelicans led by 12 early in the third quarter after Davis jump shot, but Davis then committed three fouls in the span of 1:34, giving him four for the game and prompting coach Monty Williams to bring his star forward to the bench. Less than four minutes after Davis left the game, his former Kentucky teammate, Jones, tied the game at 68. Butt New Orleans managed to regain momentum, thanks to a pair of 3s by Gordon, and led 81-74 heading into the final period. John Carlson Team USA Hockey Jersey. With New Orleans missing three top players in Ryan Anderson, Jrue Holiday and Tyreke Evans, the stage appeared set for an easy Houston victory. It appeared it could be another long night for the Pelicans when Howard took an alley-oop lob from Harden and slammed it home with two hands on the opening play of the game. Yet New Orleans wound up dominating the first quarter on both ends of the court, from Smiths crowd-pleasing block of Parsons driving dunk attempt to Davis windmill jam and his 14-foot jumper as he was fouled. Gordon had 14 points, including a pair of 3s, in the first quarter, and New Orleans led 30-19 when the period ended. Gordon scored 22 points before halftime, and New Orleans took its largest lead when Al-Farouq Aminu scored five straight points on a 3-pointer and two free throws to make it 44-27. The Rockets were back within 51-43 when Hardens no-look, behind-the-head pass set up Donatas Motiejunas easy layup. But Davis responded with a jump hook, Gordon added a free throw and New Orleans led 56-45 at halftime. Notes: Houston finished its four-game road trip at 3-1 and returns home to host Oklahoma City on Thursday night. ... The Rockets have won five of six against New Orleans. ... Houston outshot New Orleans 51.4 per cent (37 of 72) to 45.5 per cent (35 of 77). ... New Orleans had not previously lost this season when leading by 17 in any point of a game.
